THE HISTORY OF BABY CAPS AND BONNETS

Up until the early 1900s, caps were worn by both baby boys and baby girls. All babies were dressed in caps and gowns until they were past two years old. Perhaps you’ve seen old photos of your grandfather or great-grandfather dressed in clothing that would now be considered suitable for little girls.

In the days before central air conditioning, caps served an important function in regulating the baby’s body temperature. In warm weather, light weight caps served to keep drafts off ears.  They also contributed to evaporative cooling. As baby perspired, the cap became damp. As the moisture evaporated, the fabric became cool as well as the baby. In cool weather, caps were made in warm fabrics for the insulating layer and again served to wick away perspiration.

No-choke bonnet strings  You will notice small loops where the ties attach to the cap. To use, draw one tie under the chin and through the opposite loop. Tie very loosely in a light bow, or leave both strings hanging free. With the strings hanging free, if baby tugs on the cap it will release rather than choke baby. Enjoy!
